USHG Projects

Why does time period matter? Portland Cement wasn’t manufactured in the United States until 1871, and was therefore used very rarely in mortar before that time. In 1931, bagged hydrated lime became a typical replacement for lime putty, again changing the composition of mortar. These manufacturing changes make it convenient to categorize buildings by age, though that is not a true indication of the actual composition of the mortar.
