Mortar Analysis and Matching Services

US Heritage Group provides full laboratory analysis and evaluation for a variety of masonry materials including bedding/pointing mortar, brick, terra cotta, natural stone, cast stone, and architectural concrete. All mortar matching service packages provide an end-to-end solution in the form of a quality control mockup sample of mortar product that can be reproduced, modified, re-evaluated and ordered in any quantity at any time in the future.

Package A – Mortar Analysis and Matching Service – ASTM C-1324

This type of analysis measures mortar characteristics by both ASTM C-1324 petrographic analysis and acid digestion. ASTM C1324 petrographic analysis is often required by institutional and government project stakeholders. It is the most time consuming, expensive and provides the most data. Modern masonry mortars need to be analyzed petrographically if accurate binder proportions are required as their unbound lime content makes acid digestion analysis inconclusive.

Analysis of historic mortars based on petrographic analysis data alone can result in inappropriate mix design as early portland cement was not nearly as strong/reactive or consistent as modern portland cement.

Package A includes:

  • ASTM C1324 petrographic analysis
  • Acid digestion analysis
  • Report documenting original sample, analysis findings, and replacement mortar formulation recommendations
  • Sand gradation chart composed of the actual sample aggregate
  • Ten pound sample batch of custom blended mortar for quality control mockup sample
  • Laboratory finished, cured and checked quality control samples from the mockup sample batch
  • Permanent archiving of all information, formulations and samples by project, product and batch code

Package B – Mortar Analysis and Matching Service – Acid Digestion

This type of analysis measures the characteristics of the mortar by acid digestion. In addition to the physical proportion acid digestion also provides data about chemical reactivity. Comparing this measurement to our extensive control data provides very useful insight into the relative proportion of lime to cement that has actually reacted. Based on evaluation of this data we can provide approximate formulations of original historic mortar in terms of modern materials and confidently recommend an appropriate replacement mortar.

This test is not recommended for establishing the proportions of modern mortars with a high degree of accuracy as the very low unbound lime content makes acid digestion difficult.

Package B includes:

  • Acid digestion analysis
  • Report documenting original sample, analysis findings, and replacement mortar formulation recommendations
  • Sand gradation chart composed of the actual sample aggregate
  • Ten pound sample batch of custom blended mortar for quality control mockup sample
  • Laboratory finished, cured and checked quality control samples from the mockup sample batch
  • Permanent archiving of all information, formulations and samples by project, product and batch code

Package C – Mortar Matching Service – Streamlined

This streamlined package was developed as a faster and lower cost solution for projects where a full analysis report is not needed or another (non-US Heritage Group) mortar analysis has already been completed.

Package C includes:

  • Acid digestion analysis
  • Summary (one page) report documenting proposed mortar formulation
  • Sand gradation chart composed of the actual sample aggregate
  • Ten pound sample batch of custom blended mortar for quality control mockup sample
  • Laboratory finished, cured and checked quality control samples from the mockup sample batch
  • Permanent archiving of all information, formulations and samples by project, product and batch code

Package D – Mortar Color Matching Service

Color matching service matches adds pigment one of our standard mortar formulations to produce a replacement mortar that approximates the color of original mortar samples.

Package D includes:

  • Ten pound sample batch of custom blended mortar for quality control mockup sample
  • Laboratory finished, cured and checked quality control samples from the mockup sample batch
  • Permanent archiving of all information, formulations and samples by project, product and batch code
