1314 Dearborn Avenue | Chicago, IL
This elegant nineteenth century sandstone underwent cleaning, stone restoration, and repointing to restore it to its former glory. Initially sandstone is painted, trapping water in the stone and obscuring the carved details. So the paint has to be stripped off of much of the portico. Once the portico has been stripped of paint, the carved details are patched/recarved and the stone has been repointed.
Removal of the white paint from the first floor was not included in this phase. Most of the paint has been stripped from the columns. What is left must be removed from the stone by hand. After restoration is completed, the stone features its original carved and tooled appearance.
